Behind the Bench #3: The Perfect Lancaster Proposal

When Ryan came to me with an idea for a custom engagement ring, it was clear from the start how much he loved Caroline and how much he wanted this ring to be absolutely perfect for her. It didn’t hurt that she had impeccable taste, and I was over-the-moon to have the opportunity to create such a stunning piece of jewelry here in Lancaster, PA.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a meaningful Lancaster proposal, this story is for you.

The Ring: A Vintage-Inspired Treasure

Ryan had a vision. He knew Caroline was drawn to vintage pieces, especially the timeless geometry and glamour of the 1920s Art Deco movement. After looking at many vintage rings online, he chose to have a custom engagement ring made in Lancaster so it would be wholly unique and perfectly proportioned to Caroline’s hand.

He was undecided about what metal to use, so I showed him his design in both yellow and white gold to help him fully visualize the piece. Seeing a design rendered in multiple metals is one of my favorite parts of the custom process, it allows you to feel confident before we ever begin fabrication.

We custom-cut a beautiful moissanite into an elongated emerald-cut center stone with two tapered baguettes, set in half-bezels. This setting style accommodated Caroline’s work life on the farm because it’s highly durable, but it also encapsulated old-world glam in an exciting new way.

The Proposal: In a Field Full of Cows

When the ring was finished, Ryan planned the perfect proposal within a highly sentimental landscape, the Lancaster County farm where Ryan and Caroline both live and work.

Their days are filled with tending animals and getting their hands dirty, so it may have seemed like an unsuspecting location for a proposal. But it was deeply personal, and that’s what made it perfect.

I was anxiously awaiting proposal photos.

I was so happy to hear Caroline was delighted. Overjoyed. Completely surprised. And yes  in love with her ring.

From Their Story to My Bench

As a jeweler, it is my passion to see a ring come to life in the hands of the person it was made for. This one felt special from the very beginning, not just because of the emerald cut or the artfully designed setting, but because of the thought and love behind it.

Ryan and Caroline’s story is a reminder that the most meaningful moments don’t need a stage, they just need authenticity.

That’s what I love most about creating custom engagement rings in Lancaster, PA. Every piece is personal. Every design begins with a story.
